In 2026, AI chatbots have moved from experiment to real business tool. But the market is flooded with options ranging from free bots that barely work to enterprise solutions that cost thousands per month. So what does it actually cost to implement an AI chatbot for your business in Chile?

The three types of chatbot that matter

Website chatbot. The classic widget in the corner of your page. In its basic form, it is a decision tree with preset answers. In its AI version, it can understand natural language questions, query your knowledge base, and respond conversationally. Pricing ranges from free (Tidio, Crisp on basic plans) to $200-$500 USD/month for real AI solutions like Intercom or Drift.

WhatsApp Business bot. This is the channel that matters most in Latin America. With the WhatsApp Business API you can automate responses, qualify leads, and hand off conversations to a human when needed. The cost has two parts: the platform ($50 to $300 USD/month) and WhatsApp's per-conversation fee (around $0.05 USD per business-initiated message). For a volume of 500 conversations per month, you are looking at $150-$400 USD monthly total.

Instagram DM bot. Less common but increasingly relevant, especially if your business depends on social media. An Instagram bot can respond to direct messages, qualify leads, and handle frequent inquiries automatically. Solutions range from $100 to $500 USD/month depending on volume and response complexity.

This is the key decision. SaaS platforms (ManyChat, Respond.io, Botpress) can get you a working bot in days. Monthly costs are predictable and you do not need a technical team. The downside: you are limited to what the platform allows and your data lives on their servers.

Building a custom AI chatbot (using OpenAI, Anthropic, or open source models) gives you full control. You can integrate with internal systems, customize business logic, and own your data. The upfront cost is higher — between $2,000 and $8,000 USD for a functional MVP — but monthly costs drop significantly (essentially AI API consumption, which can be $50-$200 USD/month depending on volume).

Questions to ask before investing

  • How many conversations per month do you need to automate? If it is fewer than 50, you probably do not need AI.
  • Can your team handle the initial setup or do you need technical help?
  • Do you need integration with your CRM, booking system, or e-commerce platform?
  • What happens when the bot does not know the answer? The handoff to a human is critical.
  • Do your customers prefer WhatsApp, Instagram, or your website?

The most common mistake
